-03/27/00-
So I'm trying to combine the news and columns sections into one now. I noticed the news section was getting more columnish and the column section was getting more newsish, so hopefully this will keep you from having to do as much clicking back and forth in the future. The eleven things that keep me going day to day in no cohesive order: -New pants -Soup (tastes good, cheap, easy to make... Only problem is I almost always cut/scald/spill on myself but overall it works pretty well) -The guitar part at the start of "Construction Paper is Glued" with the big drop- Rock! -Tombstones with comical inscriptions -The weekly Police Report -Farscape (Just the right amount of style and kitsch, don't get the channel here at school though) -The one Student Government Association girl with the short hair -Turntablists in rock bands -Castles on cliffs in Scotland -Fear Effect -The unsettling randomness of our modern world I had a pretty good weekend, I saw three shows, my favorites were Ted Leo and Haymarket Riot. Brendan and I also went to a Josh Rouse show in Peoria which was cool, I'm so used to punk shows were six bands play for five and a half hours, it's nice to go to a show where two bands play for a total of an hour and a half. I would definitely recommend Rouse's record "Home" to anyone who enjoys the new Luna album, Bob Mould or the Weakerthans. I was supposed to see "Clerks" on Saturday but there was some sort of mixup at the theater and I saw "Dogma" instead. It wasn't bad but it was no Clerks. As per usual there were a bunch of nerds there and they laughed at all the stupid jokes. I think I was the only one who got the "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" reference, I laughed pretty hard at that. |
Our last show -03/28/00-
We had our last show at Agape Thursday and all in all, it was a huge success. We actually filled the place and had to turn a few latecomers away. This is the third time I've seen Steven and I'm still as impressed as the first time. Sedona picked up the pace as more kids began to turn out for the show. John Galt unleashed their unique brand of intense, fast math rock on the unexpecting audience. Ted Leo exceeded all expectations with his unplaceable fusion of rock and pop. God's Reflex is still one of my favorite band names. And Alkaline Trio, as always, was there for the fans. A big thank you to John Heisel for doing all the work and putting the show together. Thanks also to Karen for coming over from Chambana on a Thursday to help out and also to Jenny for putting up with all of us. Thanks to Tom for doing sound, Craig, Kristen and Brendan for various door and cleanup duties. Thanks to the church for the Agape itself. A million honest thanks to the bands for playing; Steven, Sedona, John Galt, Ted Leo, God's Reflex and Alkaline Trio. Thanks also to those whose names I did not learn or whose help I could not see through the huge mass of people. I think the show did a pretty good job of summing up the eclectic nature of the Agape. Thanks also to the kids who came out, we saw familiar faces, old friends and completely new people and it was great having all of you, we hope you had as good of a time as we did. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Although we will no longer be doing shows at the Agape, the interest both bands and others have expressed to us will ensure that there should be some sort of continuing independent music presence in Bloomington-Normal. We will still be booking shows at Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, the Gallery and wherever else there is room for a few people with instruments to play for some other people. ISU now has a registered student organization (RSO) as well, I belive it is the Benchmark Music Association or something along those lines, and I know they will be setting up some shows. I've thought about continuing the mailing list in some form, but I think there is already a lot of show info sources out there, so instead of trying to collect and list all the area shows for you it would probably just be easier to direct you to the best source around, the CUBaNS (Champaign Urbana Bloomington and Normal Shows) list. They have a lot of great listings and a lot of subscribers, email them at wesn@sun.iwu.edu to sign up. I think I will leave the list up though, just in case I ever some up important reason to bother you all. So be warned. Thanks again all and feel free to email me about any of this. |
